Ramsley Mine, Devon
During construction of the Exeter to Okehampton Turnpike Road (later the original A30) in 1829 rich minerals were discovered at Ramsley near South Zeal in Devon. Mining for copper began in the 1850s and continued until closure c1909. The shaft was unusual as it was build on a steep hill side and protected by a retaining wall. A chimney is also a prominent land mark. An inclined tramway linked the mine to a waterwheel powered mill at Drybridge.
