The black cross in the stone breaking yard which marks the location of the execution of the Scottish born leader of the Irish Citizen Army Commandant James Connolly. Wounded in fighting at the GPO he was brought to Kilmainham Gaol by ambulance and sat in a chair to face the firing squad. This location being chosen as it was close to the vehicle entrance seen right. He was executed on May 12, 1916.
