The Kit Hill Quarry Incline Plane was constructed to link Kit Hill Quarries with the 3ft 6in gauge East Cornwall Mineral Railway which opened in 1872. It was a self acting gravity incline with a gradient of 1 in 5 at its head and 1 in 8 at the foot. The incline was 1600 feet long. This view was taken before the course of the incline was cleared. It is now a public path. The incline was single track below the crossing place, above there was a shared centre rail, not unlike the arrangement which exists on the lower section of the Great Orme Tramway in Wales. The incline was converted to standard gauge during the 1930s. The East Cornwall Mineral Railway with which it connected at Downgate Sidings had been converted to standard gauge around 1907/8 later becoming part of the London South Western Railway, later Southern Railway.
