Hayle - Cornwall's Historic Industrial Port

Once home to two rival industrial concerns - the Copper House Foundry operated by Sandys, Carne and Vivian and Harvey's of Hayle. Eventually Harvey's were to prevail and last into the late 20th Century before being consumed by the United Builder's Merchants Group (UBM) which in turn passed to Jewsons. Today in the 21st Century the Industrial Heritage of Hayle is being conserved as part of quayside developments. These views show aspects of Hayle in the pre-digital age just as awareness of the areas industrial heritage was being awakened.

Harvey's of Hayle 1856 15-inch siege mortar which has been displayed near the site of the old Harvey's works in Hayle, Cornwall for many years. When this photograph was taken the mortar had only recently been mounted on a replica timber carriage. It still stands there today but when I last photographed it in 2016 it looked as though the carriage needs some attention again!

    Hayle Harbour, Cornwall - August 30, 1982

View from North Quay to South Quay. From this harbour ships owned by Harvey & Company traded. It was not to be for another 30 years after many failed attempts a project to conserve and develop Hayle Harbour was commenced. The area now looks much tidier!

Hayle Wharf Branch Line - August 30, 1992

The swing bridge built by Harvey & Company of Hayle for the Great Western Railway on the Hayle Wharf Branch Line. The bridge provided for both road and rail access across the navigable channel leading into Copperhouse Pool and the Copperhouse Canal. Happily the bridge was conserved in second decade of the 21st Century along with its associated engine control building and now is exclusively for pedestrian use. A new fixed bridge being provided nearby. The bridge is last believed to have been opened during WWII.

    Scoria Blocks - Copperhouse, Cornwall - 1989

Scoria blocks are peculiar to the Copperhouse and Hayle area. They are brick-shaped building blocks known as Copperhouse slag or scoria blocks. They were cast from the residue of the copper smelting works that operated at Ventonleague 250 years ago. The Copperhouse Foundry operated from 1750 to c.1820, and thereafter most of Cornwall's copper ore went to Wales, where the coal supplies were, for smelting. The copper was smelted in reverberatory furnaces, a process which involved eight roastings and meltings of the ore. The slag or scoria from the first melting only was used for making building blocks, the residues from subsequent meltings being so rich that they were re-cycled through the furnaces again.

The site of the former Harvey & Company mill complex were conserved in 1986 to form the "Millpond Gardens". This industrial site was developed between 1780 and 1830 by John Harvey and comprised a hammer mill, boring mill and corn mill which was supplied by water from the adjacent millpond. Nearby was the Harvey & Company Foundry which constructed many of the pumping engines used in Cornwall's mines and also mines and drainage projects further afield.
