Tedburn St Mary, Teignbridge District, Devon - May 24, 1992

Red Lion Inn sign photographed in May 1992 shortly after the Red Lion had been bought from Whitbread plc - notice that "Whitbread" above the sign has been painted out. The Red Lion Inn is situated beside the former A30 road between Exeter and Cheriton Cross at Tedburn St Mary. This part of the village had once been known as Taphouse. My parents and I used to stay at the Red Lion for holidays from around 1966 to 1996. Between 1960 and the mid 1980s the Inn was run by Jack Austin a former Southern Railway loco driver from Ashford in Kent. Later it was operated by Graham and Lyn Currey until 1996. The Inn was originally an Exeter City Brewery House, passing to Whitbread in the 1960s. At the end of the 1980s it passed from brewery ownership to private ownership and was briefly known as The Village Inn in the early 1990s during the ownership of the Currey Family. Following its sale it reverted to the original Red Lion name which it retains today. Significant changes occurred in 1969 following a fire. The building was originally thatched but in common with quite a few thatched properties along the A30 trunk road had received a corrugated tin covering to provide protection from steam lorries probably in the 1920s. Unfortunately a spark from a nearby bonfire managed to get under the tin covering and set the thatch on fire. This resulted in the Red Lion Inn being closed for about 6 moths for an extensive rebuild of the upper floor and a refit of the lower into a modern style bar.

  • Bennet's Cross, Dartmoor, Devon - September 03, 1989

    Bennet's Cross, Dartmoor, Devon - September 03, 1989

Although the exact reason for Bennet’s Cross, which lies beside the B3212 road near the Warren House Inn, being erected is not known, it has served at least three different purposes: • Boundary Stone for the parishes of North Bovey and Chagford • Boundary Stone for the Headland Warren (WB – Warren Bounds) • Boundary marker showing the limit of the Vitifer Mine complex. Size: 5 feet 8 inches (1.70 metres) tall. 1 foot 9 inches (0.55 metres) across the arms. That this cross is very old is borne out by the rough and rugged way it has been hewn out of a single block of granite, with a marked kink in the main shaft. The earliest recorded reference to the cross is in 1702, but it was probably erected long before this date. It has the letters ‘W B’ carved into the west-north-west face, which stand for ‘Warren Bounds’, to mark the limit of the Headland Warren boundary. In its day, this warren was fully occupied in supplying rabbit meat to the tinners of Vitifer Mines. There are a number of theories as to how it got the name of Bennet’s Cross. One was that it was named after a 16th Century tin miner, by the name of William Bennet, who held the tin rights in this area and who had the cross erected to mark his boundary. Another theory is that this is one of a number of crosses marking the route between two Benedictine Monasteries at Exeter and Tavistock. (The word ‘Bennet’ or ‘Benet’ being a mediaeval corruption of Benedictine).

Penney Cross, Sharp Tor, Devon - February 24, 1987

The Cave-Penney memorial cross seen from the Babeny Road, near Dartmeet. The Cave-Penney Cross Bebeny on Dartmoor was erected in memory of Lieutenant Evelyn Cave-Penney, who was killed by a sniper in Palestine during the First World War. The relatively modern cross measures 4 feet 3 inches (1.30 metres) tall. 1 foot 10 inches (0.56 metres) across the arms. The socket stone is named ‘The Belstone Bible'. The north face of the socket stone is inscribed: TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND TO THE DEAR MEMORY OF EVELYN ANTHONY CAVE PENNEY LIEUT. Q.V.O. CORPS OF GUIDES FELL IN PALESTINE WHILST GALLANTLY COMMANDING HIS MEN JUNE 8TH 1918 AGED 19 ---------- - ---------- LOOK UP AND LIFT UP YOUR HEADS ---------- - ----------
