Redlake Tramway and China Clay Works - Dartmoor
The Redlake Tramway was a railway built to carry supplies and workers between Bittaford and the clay workings at Redlake, in the heart of the southern part of Dartmoor.
The tramway was constructed in 1911 to a 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge, and ran for a circuitous 8.3 miles (13.4 km).
The trackbed provides for an easy walking route and back in October 1989 my father and I decided to walk the track, though we didn’t quite make it to the very end of the line as my father were starting to suffer from sore feet and had developed various blisters by the time we returned to the car at Bittaford!
For a detailed history of the tramway which closed around 1933 following the closure of the associated clay works one is recommended to read the “The Redlake Tramway and China Clay Works” by EA Wade published by Twelveheads Press.
