Torrington to Beam
Photographs taken on the route of the former London and South Western Railway / Southern Railway route from Torrington to Barnstaple Junction.
The railway closed to passenger services in 1965, however, freight traffic in particular fertiliser traffic heading into the area and ball clay from clay works alongside the North Devon and Cornwall Junction Light Railway as well as milk trains meant that the railway remained open until autumn 1982.
During this time the line also saw excursion and railtour trains calling. The track remained intact to the mid-1980s as there had been an active local campaign to reinstate the railway. However, lack of funding mean that the track was removed and the railway route to Barnstaple and long with the route of the North Devon and Cornwall Junction Light Railway as far as Meeth in the south was converted to the Tarka Trail Greenway cycle / foot path.
However preservation groups at both Torrington and Bideford are still working towards a partial or full reinstatement at some time in the future.
