Sefton Park Station - Liverpool
Sefton Park Station opened on June 01, 1892 after the quadrupling of the railway between Wavertree and Ditton Junction on 13 July 1891.
The station building was located on the west side of the Smithdown Road overbridge. There was a subway connection between the platform on the east side of the bridge as well as the island platform which served the down fast and up slow lines.
There was direct stair access to the down slow platform.
Timber built waiting rooms were provided on the platforms. The station was managed by the station master at nearby Mossley Hill. However, competition from a frequent electric tramway and latterly bus services into the city centre reduced the demand for the station which closed on May 02, 1960.
The platforms were demolished though traces of the subway remain which can sometimes be glimpsed from the forecourt of Leadbetter and Murphy’s Undertakers depending on the state of the lineside vegetation!
There have been suggestions in recent years given further increases in population with large numbers of students living in the area that the station could be rebuilt and reopened.
