Cromford & High Peak Railway: High Peak Junction
The Cromford and High Peak Railway (C&HPR) was a standard-gauge railway between the Cromford Canal at High Peak Junction and the Peak Forest Canal at Whaley Bridge.
The railway, which was completed in 1831, was built to carry minerals and goods through the hilly rural terrain of the Peak District within Derbyshire, England. The route was marked by a number of roped worked inclines. The railway passed into the ownership of the London North Western Railway, then LMS before finally ending its days under British Railways London Midland Region.
The railway is one of Britain’s notable early railways. Due to falling traffic closure came in 1967 remains of the line, between Dowlow and Cromford was converted into the High Peak Trail by Derbyshire County Council.
At the bottom of Sheep Pasture Incline at High Peak Junction beside the Cromford Canal is an historic former railway works now functioning as a museum, visitor centre, gift and coffee shop.
