Great Western Society at Didcot Railway Centre

The Great Western Society (GWS) was offered the use of the former Didcot locomotive depot, taking it over in 1967. In the 1970s, the society negotiated a long-term lease with BR which was to expire in 2019. But this was subject to a six-month termination clause which could force the GWS to quit the site, and which could be operated at any point in time by lease-holder Network Rail (NR).

In an attempt to secure a long-term future for the society, in 2002 the GWS opened negotiations with NR to either purchase the site or extend the lease. In a letter dated May 2007, NR informed the GWS that they were prepared to sell the site subject to Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) approval.
It had been thought the site could be subject to need as a depot, either due to: the rebuilding of Reading station; a Crossrail project depot; or the Intercity Express Programme. After expressing some concern at the slow speed of negotiations at the GWS annual meeting in September 2008, NR wrote to the GWS to advise that the site was no longer available for sale, and although a lease extension was still on offer it was still subject to the previous six-month termination clause.

The GWS then wrote to their local MP Ed Vaizey, and placed any long-term development plans on hold. As of 6 October 2011 Richard Croucher (Chairman of the Great Western Society) signed a new 50-year lease with Network Rail, therefore preserving the site for at least another 50 years.

The reception building at the entrance to the Didcot Railway Museum was originally built as a ground frame hut and was used to house the Yard Ground Frame at the east end of Didcot station. The adjoining porch structure has been added in a similar style to the original building, to provide shelter to arriving visitors.

Didcot Locomotive shed contains four tracks each providing 200 feet of covered space. Each track can accommodate three tender locomotives or around six tank engines. The most striking features inside the shed are the smoke hoods running above the tracks and designed to carry all the smoke from the locomotives out through the wooden chimneys on the roof.

Class 08 locomotive 08604 was based at Tyseley near Birmingham. She was withdrawn after sheering a crank pin key and sold to a private individual. She was originally loaned to Didcot and made serviceable again. On the expiry of the loan agreement the loco was purchased outright by the GWS and now forms a very important part of the site's plant and equipment. The locomotive spent some time in a fictitious black war department livery with the number WD40, and then in the 'Tyseley' BR lined out green, but in August 2010 she was repainted into an earlier plain green livery. In August 2017 the livery changed yet again, this time to BR Blue. She is now used on for shunting the yard at Didcot Railway Centre and sometimes works demonstration goods trains and very occasionally passenger trains at Open Days and Special Events.

3738 was completed at Swindon works in September 1937. She was allocated to Old Oak Common depot in London. After a working life of around half a million miles, she was sent for scrapping to Woodham Bros. of Barry in August 1965. From there she was bought by two GW Society members, who brought it to Didcot in 1974, where she was restored to full operational use in 1976. After a period out of use from the mid 80s to mid 90s she was returned to steam She then ran until the mid 1980s when she became due for a full overhaul. She joined the queue and was returned to steam around 1995. The locomotive was taken out of traffic in July 2013 with firebox problems.

Prairie tank 5572, was built at Swindon in February 1929. a member of the 4575 sub-class, she was almost the last produced (two from the end). Based for most of her life in the South West, in her later years she moved to South Wales where, unusually for this class, she was equipped with auto-gear for working push-and-pull trains on the valley branch lines. Of the thirteen engines of this very useful class to have survived into preservation, 5572 is the only one so fitted. She was withdrawn by BR in April 1962, being sent to Woodham Bros of Barry for breaking up. She was bought by the Great Western Society in August 1971, and sent to its Taunton depot, being partially restored there before moving to Didcot in 1977. Having reached the end of her ten-year boiler certificate, she is awaiting heavy repairs. She has seen service on preserved railways away from Didcot.

6106 was built at Swindon in May 1931, and withdrawn from Oxford depot in December 1965. She was purchased in working order in 1966 by a Great Western Society member, being sent to the small depot temporarily established by the Society in the old Taplow goods shed. There she was steamed occasionally until able to move to Didcot in October 1967. At Didcot she has been in almost continual use, apart from repair periods on expiry of each ten-year boiler certificate. Having also worked on certain preserved railways, she has been withdrawn from active service for yet another ten-year major overhaul. 6106 featured in several films including 'The Bliss of Mrs Blossom' when, painted in psychedelic colours, she operated in a contrived snowstorm at Taplow, to the consternation of surprised main-line drivers! Currently out of service, the locomotive was given a cosmetic overhaul and repaint in 2019.
