Rhosydd and Conglog Slate Quarries
Rhosydd and Conglog Slate Quarries are in the remote Cwmorthin Valley some distance from Cwmorthin Quarry.
Rhosydd was the larger of the two concerns operating from 1830s through to 1930. From 1930 Rhosydd was maintained on a care and maintenance basis until 1948 when the pumps to the underground workings were switched off.
Much of the plant was cleared in the 1950s by scrap merchants.
Rhosydd existed on two levels. The principal workings where at high level up a steep tack from Cwmorthin. Located at the bottom of the track near Conglog Quarry where a terrace of houses, the Rhosydd Quarry Agent’s resident “Plas Cwmorthin”, Rhosydd Stables and some distance away beside the track / track bed of the Conglog tramway Rhosydd Chapel / Capel Gorlan. Rhosydd Quarry despatched its product via a steep incline which connected with the Croesor Tramway.
Conglog Quarry was a small concern operated by several proprietors between 1854 and 1910. Its mill being located adjacent to Rhosydd Terrace. Its workings above the track leading up to Rhosydd.
Originally transport links were provided by pack horse through Cwmorthin, however in 1873 agreement was reached with Cwmorthin Slate Quarry to construct a tramway from Conglog to connect with the tramway system which operated in Cwmorthin and which had a connection with the Ffestiniog Railway.
Materials to construct the Conglog Tramway were obsolete items sold to the Conglog Quarry buy the Ffestiniog Railway.
Today some evidence of the Conglog Tramway trackwork can be seen in places.
