Cwm Machno Slate Quarry

Dominating the quarry village of Cwm Penmachno is the Cwm Machno Slate Quarry, sometimes referred to as Rhiw Fachno of Cwm Penmachno Slate Quarry.

Primarily an open working there were some underground levels. The quarry did have an internal railway system but lacked a rail connection though there was a suggested attempt to link the quarry to the Rhiwbach Tramway to provide a link to the Festiniog Railway.

The lack of a rail collection meant that originallyits output had to be transported to Trefriw Wharf on the River Conwy and from 1868 the shorter distance to Betws y Coed station.

The quarry employed 70 men in 1872, 178 in 1898, and 108 in 1937-8. It finally closed in 1962.

The quarry site was subjected to landscaping in the 1980s which significantly changed its appearance and removed a number of structures. The main Trwnc incline was given grade II listed structure status in 1982.
