Coalbrookdale

The village where iron was first smelted by coking coal by Abraham Derby. It is still home to the Coalbrookdale Company now part of the Aga Group which makes traditional cast iron range cookers and kitchen equipment. Much of the original Coalbrookdale Company Ironworks site is now in the care of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums Trust who operate the Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron in some of the former factory buildings. Sadly the Aga Group ceased iron founding in the site in November 2017 choosing to source components for their cookers from suppliers elsewhere in the UK and Europe.

Coalbrookdale Company shunting locomotives stored underneath the GWR Coalbrookdale Viaduct. The viaduct was nicknamed "The Golden Mile" which crosses the Upper Furnace Pool and Upper Works of the Coalbrookdale Company. Built in 1860, the railway acquired the name 'Golden Mile' on account of the high cost of building it on this difficult site, with a curved viaduct over a lake, and without disturbing the operations of the iron company beneath.
