Duke's Dock looking east with the Metropolitan Cathedral in the background. The dock was named after the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, Francis Egerton who completed this private transshipment dock in 1773. Designed by John Gilbert the Duke's Engineer it was converted into a half tide dock by Jesse Hartley between 1843-5. Unlike the other docks it is quite narrow and was primarily designed for barges.
The buildings on the south east and north esat side of the dock were restores between 1983 and 1986. The Albert Dock Complex was constructed by Jesse Hartley from 1841. it became operational in 1846 and was completed and officially opened by Prince Albert in 1847.
