Buckfast Abbey

Buckfast Abbey forms part of an active Benedictine monastery at Buckfast.

Buckfast first became home to an abbey in 1018. The first Benedictine abbey was followed by a Savignac (later Cistercian) abbey constructed on the site of the current abbey in 1134. The monastery was surrendered for dissolution in 1539, with the monastic buildings stripped and left as ruins, before being finally demolished. The former abbey site was used as a quarry, and later became home to a Gothic mansion house.

In 1882 the site was purchased by a group of French Benedictine monks, who refounded a monastery on the site, dedicated to Saint Mary. New monastic buildings and a temporary church were constructed incorporating the existing Gothic house.

Buckfast was formally reinstated as an Abbey in 1902, and the first abbot of the new institution, Boniface Natter, was blessed in 1903. Work on a new abbey church, which was constructed mostly on the footprint of the former Cistercian abbey, started in 1907.
The church was consecrated in 1932 and completed in 1938.

The abbey continues to operate as a Benedictine foundation today and is very popular with visitors.

Late autumn afternoon in the Millennium Garden. The Millennium Garden was designed by Maia Hall and supported by Abbey Head Gardener Aaron Southgate, to represent the view looking out from the monastery window, catching site of the magnificent stag through the silver birches. Featuring a central arched window framing the stag drinking from the pool - a representation of the Abbey’s logo. Naturalistic planting, sculptural stumps and the use of logs to create a rustic wall all reflect the lifecycle in the adjacent woodlands. The balance of life and death, creativity and growth are all represented by the interweaving of planting and deadwood structures. This is accentuated by the sinuous deadwood branches used to cap the log wall. The aim of the garden is to show how the formality and beauty of religion live in harmony with the beautiful valley the monks have chosen to inhabit. The meandering silvery pathway is reminiscent of a river bed or holy walk. The log seating is for quiet reflection, meditation and prayer. Clipped hornbeam hedges define the garden space. Our colour scheme is strictly green and white with touches of blue to enhance the tranquil ambience. The Buckfast Abbey Millennium Garden is about balance, space, peacefulness, rejuvenation and authenticity.

Buckfast Abbey Crest The Crest of Buckfast Abbey displayed on the organ gallery. The motto of the Abbey is taken from psalm 41/42: “As a deer longs for flowing streams, so longs my soul for you, O God.” The name Buckfast means ‘land of the deer’ and the Abbey is on the banks of the River Dart in the Dartmoor foothills.
